On an island known for its sun, sea and stone, beauty is easy to see. But what matters more is caring for it.
We’ve never believed luxury ends at a villa’s doorstep. It extends into the land itself and the people who make this island what it is. Supporting Moj Škoj is our way of giving that love back in tangible ways.
An island in balance
Moj Škoj is a local association devoted to the sustainable and regenerative development of Hvar, with a mission rooted in protecting the environment, improving community life and preserving the island’s natural and cultural wealth. Their work connects tradition and innovation, addressing today’s challenges while restoring what once made Hvar self-sufficient, clean and whole.

Their initiatives span from reducing single-use plastic through island-wide refill stations to reviving old footpaths that once linked villages — and all of them share one common thread: renewal. They invite both locals and visitors to see Hvar not as a destination to consume, but as a living place to be cared for. Every project strengthens the island’s foundations, from the soil to the sea, from the people who call it home to those who come to experience its spirit.
Reviving Hvar’s historical footpaths
Reviving the historical footpaths project is one of Moj Škoj’s most poetic gestures. It is an effort to restore the network of stone trails that once carried islanders between fields, villages and harbours. These paths aren’t just remnants of the past; they are lines of memory and belonging. By reopening them, Moj Škoj is re-establishing a slower and more mindful way of travel, one that invites hikers, families and wanderers to rediscover Hvar through its landscapes rather than its roads.

Refill Hvar – pour it up for less plastic
Equally powerful is ‘Refill Hvar’, a simple but transformative project creating a network of public refill stations for drinking water. It encourages everyone, residents and travelers alike, to use reusable bottles and reduce plastic waste, a vital step toward cleaner beaches and a healthier ecosystem.

True Blue initiative
They also support the True Blue Factory & Shop in the town of Hvar, a creative space where collected beach plastics are transformed into new objects like jewelry, lamps and home décor pieces that carry stories of the sea. The factory also doubles as an educational centre and workshop, hosting springtime beach cleanups that welcome both locals and visitors.
Adopt-a-Spot
And then there’s the Adopt-a-Spot programme, a call for local businesses and individuals to take responsibility for specific beaches, green spaces and walking trails. Each adopter commits to maintaining, cleaning and caring for their chosen place, supported by Moj Škoj’s coordination and expertise.

It’s an idea built on reciprocity: the company gains visibility as a steward of nature, while the community gains a cleaner, better-cared-for island. Benches, shade structures, native plants and informational signs are thoughtfully added, creating spaces that are as functional as they are respectful of the island.
Caring for the sea beneath us
Moj Škoj’s vision extends beyond the shore and into the blue depths that define Hvar’s identity. Yet another one of their initiatives uses clay balls enriched with beneficial microorganisms — a remarkable act of marine restoration.
Designed by Japanese professor Teruo Higa, these clay spheres are placed on the seabed, where they slowly dissolve, releasing microorganisms that transform sediment and impurities into nourishment. The process not only purifies the water but also generates oxygen, feeding phytoplankton and revitalising the fragile ecosystems that live beneath the surface. Over time, these microorganisms renew what human impact has dulled, giving the sea a chance to breathe again.

All of these initiatives echo what we value most at Villas Hvar: responsibility, respect and a profound connection to this place. We look forward to participating in Moj Škoj’s mission, hopefully starting with the adoption of our first beach, a space we’ll help care for and keep pristine.
A shared vision
Sustainability, to us, has always meant continuity. It’s about ensuring that Hvar remains as generous tomorrow as it is today. Supporting Moj Škoj is part of that promise. Their work reminds us that preservation isn’t about holding the island still but helping it thrive.
Supporting Moj Škoj is our way of giving back to the place that makes us who we are through everyday action. Because to love Hvar is to protect it, one thoughtful choice at a time.
